Hedeby pants
Hedeby pants
Pants recreated after the textile fragments from Hedeby, which hypothetically demonstrates a specific Viking Age fashion of wide pants, described in 10th century by arab travelers.
"Out of 100 cubits (gaz) of cotton fabric (karbās), more or less, they sew trousers which they put on (andar pūshand), tucking them up above the knee (bar sar-i zānū gird karda dārand).”
Such wide pants made of fine and expensive fabric, was a sign of wealth and high status of the owner in the Viking Age society. The fragment found in Hedeby is made of very fine wool with a preserved seam of which this fabric was pleated into small folds. It’s not totally clear how long these pants were supposed to be, but visual sources, such as a bronze figure from Uppakra (Sweden), demonstrate a length slightly longer than the knee. These trousers can be worn with high stitched or nalebound socks, leg wraps or in warm weather they will be your perfect Viking Age shorts.
